Acai: Dr. Perricone’s #1 Superfood

In order for something to be classified as a “superfood” it needs to have been proven to have certain health benefits such as help regulate blood sugar levels – very important for those who want to slow down the aging process and preventing diabetes, reduce obesity, wrinkles and a host of degenerative diseases.  Most of the time superfoods are brightly colored fruit and vegetables, along with nuts, beans, seeds and aromatic and brightly colored herbs and spices.

Dr. Perricone listed the top 10 superfoods on the Oprah Winfrey Show and Acai came in at number one.  This is primarily because studies have shown that this little acai berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world!  Acai is packed full of antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids.  Acai is not always available in your local supermarket, but you can usually find it in gourmet stores – usually in juice form.

Here are the reasons Dr. Perricone ranked Acai as the number one superfood:

  • It has an almost perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with valuable trace minerals, vital to proper muscle contraction and regeneration.
  • Acai offers a synergy of monosaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber and phytosterols to help promote cardiovascular and digestive health.
  • Only acai berries contain a remarkably high concentration of antioxidants that help combat premature aging, with 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine.

Dr. Oz’s Anti-Aging Checklist

Dr. Oz and Oprah

Dr. Oz is perhaps the most accomplished and respected cardiothoracic surgeon in the United States. Born in Cleveland, OH to Turkish parents, he works at Columbia University New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He is a graduate of University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; he also holds an MBA from Wharton School of Business at Penn. The kind and remarkable doctor operates on some 400 patients a year, is a Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Columbia University, director of Cardiovascular Institute at Columbia Presbyterian, directs the Heart Assist Device Program and is the founder of the Complimentary Medicine Program.

Dr. Oz stated on Oprah that one of his favorite anti-aging foods are blueberries. A quick visual glance can tell you that blueberries are packed full of antioxidants because of their dark color. Acai berries are also extremely dark, and therefore, full of antioxidants. Here are a few of the anti-aging foods Dr. Oz recommends keeping in the fridge:

  • Acai Berries
  • Blueberries
  • Sweet potatoes,
  • Broccoli
  • Tomatoes

Dr. Oz introduced, while talking with Oprah, the acai berry into this anti aging hall of fame list. He raved, “it has twice the antioxidant content as a blueberry, so it’s a wonderful alternative.” Dr. Oz states, “look at the food label and make sure they don’t have too many carbohydrates in there. It’s [acai berries] just sort of breaking through.”
